How Certly works

2. AI reads the certificate
Entity name, state, certificate number, expiry date — all extracted automatically. You're not retyping anything from a PDF.
3. You approve in one click
Approval flips the customer's taxExempt to true and tags them. Shopify stops charging them sales tax from that moment on.
4. Renewals run themselves
Certly emails customers 60, 30, and 7 days before expiry. Lapsed certs auto-expire so you never accidentally exempt a customer with stale paperwork.

Does Certly file my taxes or talk to states for me?

No. Certly handles the certificate side — collecting, reading, and tracking exemption paperwork from your B2B customers. Tax calculation and filing stay where they already are (Shopify Tax, your accountant, or whatever you use today).

What happens when I uninstall?

Shopify sends us an uninstall webhook and we delete your shop's data — uploaded files, OCR'd fields, the audit log — within 48 hours. Your customers' Shopify tax-exempt flags stay where they are; we don't undo approvals you made.

Can my customers upload from their phone?

Yes. The upload block lives on the Shopify customer account page, which is responsive by default. They can snap a photo of the cert and upload it directly.

What if the AI gets a field wrong?

Every extracted field is editable in the merchant admin before you approve. The AI fills in the form for you; it doesn't decide for you.

Which states does Certly support?

All US states that accept resale or exemption certificates. You configure which states you collect tax in (and therefore need certs for) in Settings. Certificate validation against state databases is not currently built-in — that's an Avalara-territory feature we don't try to compete with.

Can I bulk-import existing certificates?

Not in v1. It's planned. For now, customers can upload their certs the next time they log in, and Certly takes it from there.
